Laboratory Science Program Goals
During the year-long program, the main goal is to transform qualified students into medical professionals who can apply scientific principles and techniques to the vital role that laboratory science plays in the Hospital and healthcare environment.
Other goals of the program include developing high-quality lab professionals committed to lifelong learning, staying abreast of new developments, and having the flexibility to adapt to a changing profession.
Student Learning Objectives to Meet Entry Level Competency for Medical Laboratory Science
Medical Laboratory Scientists are competent in a great variety of procedures and job functions. Since the laboratory staff expects the student to meet certain standards at job entry level, the objectives of the program are those which will allow the student to meet those standards. After the completion of the one-year program in the School of Medical Lab Science, the student will:
- State the importance of the clinical laboratory and the part it plays in the diagnosis and treatment of the patient’s condition.
- Perform routine laboratory procedures and some specialized assays based on SOP under direct supervision from qualified laboratory staff.
- Utilize and apply applicable safety and governmental regulations and standards to clinical laboratory practices.
- Practices and performs professional conduct and the significance of continuing professional development over time.
- Communicates sufficiently to serve the needs of patients, the public, and members of interdepartmental healthcare systems.
- Correlates educational methodologies and terminology that is necessary for providing laboratory tests and services
- Describes and correlates the importance of clinical study design, implementation and dissemination of results and how it impacts patient treatment.
- Develops interpretational and evaluation skills for clinical procedures and results.
