As part of the Patient Blood Management Programs at Reading Hospital, the Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Program provides an atmosphere of dignity and respect for patients who refuse blood transfusions due to blood safety concerns, religious convictions or personal reasons.

Bloodless medicine and surgery involve the same principles as patient blood management, except transfusion is not an option under any circumstances. Our team evaluates each patient’s medical and treatment needs, while respecting the desire to avoid the use of blood or blood products.

Benefits of Bloodless Medicine and Surgery

There are many benefits to a bloodless approach. Research shows that patients who do not receive blood transfusions may experience:

  • Faster recovery
  • Fewer infections
  • Shorter hospital stays
