Reading Hospital President and CEO Donation to Employee Assistance Fund Is a Home Run
West Reading, Pa., August 26, 2019 - When Reading Hospital President and CEO William M. Jennings attended Opening Day of the Reading Hospital Employee softball league in May 2019, he didn't know what to expect. He knew the popular league, with more than 400 employees involved, was an opportunity for friendly competition between departments and colleagues.
Jennings, impressed by the skill on the field, decided on Opening Day he wanted to further encourage all players. In a conversation with Luis De Oleo, the Softball League Commissioner, he learned that 2,538 runs were scored during the 2018 season. On the spot, and without hesitation, Jennings pledged $1 per run scored in the 2019 season, including playoffs, to the Reading Hospital Foundation Employee Assistance Fund.
On Wednesday, August 21, Jennings was joined by De Oleo and Division 2 Champion team Captain Audrey Nittinger to present a $2,797 check to Katherine Thornton, President, Reading Hospital Foundation.
"Every Reading Hospital employee serves as a healer for the patients and communities we care for," Jennings said. "Reading Hospital's promise to the community is 'Advancing Health. Transforming Lives.' and that extends to our employees as well. The Employee Assistance Fund will help us demonstrate that promise to our colleagues when they need it most."
The generosity and devotion of Reading Hospital employees have inspired many Reading Hospital Foundation programs and initiatives that directly impact our patients and staff in need. The employee giving campaign is another opportunity for team members to continue supporting the charitable mission of the Foundation.
"The Employee Assistance Fund will provide financial assistance to employees facing immediate, severe, and temporary hardships due to an emergency. This generous donation Bill is providing will be life-changing for our colleagues and their families," remarked Thornton. "We appreciate his ongoing leadership and support to Reading Hospital Foundation."
