June 1 is Deadline for EMS Paramedic Scholarships Application

New scholarships are now available for individuals who plan to attend the Emergency Medical Services Paramedic Education Program offered at the Reading Hospital School of Health Sciences. The one-year program is open to certified Emergency Medical Technicians and Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians with at least one year of experience in emergency care.

The deadline for application for the scholarships is Friday, June 1. Applicants can apply to the EMS Paramedic Program and scholarship here, or at https://reading.towerhealth.org/academics/health-sciences/programs/emergency-medical-services/paramedic-education-program/. Once accepted into the program, applicants are asked to write an essay of at least 100 words and not more than 250 words on "Why I deserve the Paramedic Scholarship."

The Paramedic Education Program is a full year course with three semesters. Each class includes 20 to 24 students. All students accepted into the Paramedic Education Program are eligible for any of the scholarships provided they are not already receiving a scholarship award from another agency. Scholarship recipients will be selected by the EMS faculty.

Several scholarships are available, including:

  • The new Charles F. Barbera Scholarship, a full scholarship, covers tuition and fees. This scholarship was established by Charles Barbera, MD, MBA, FACEP, Chair, Reading Hospital Department of Emergency Medicine.
  • The James A. Gilmartin scholarship provides $2,500 before the EMS program starts, and grants award money for the highest GPA student in each of its three semesters.
  • Nine additional scholarships provide funding for tuition.

"The goal of the scholarships, especially the new Charles F. Barbera scholarship, is to promote our paramedic program in the community and to aid EMTs who need financial assistance to attend school to become a paramedic," said Russell E. Engle, director of EMS Education at the Reading Hospital School of Health Sciences.
