'Family Friendly Afternoon' to Teach Healthy Cooking Options with Reading Hospital Expert Culinary Team
Reading Hospital will educate children and adults at "Family Friendly Afternoon", a hands-on cooking class, which will be held on Saturday, September 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Reading Hospital Conference Center, 420 S. Fifth Ave. The event, which will provide a unique interactive cooking experience with Reading Hospital's expert culinary team, including Zach Moyer and Stephanie Torres, is part of Tower Health's #TowerGimmeFive wellness campaign.
"Family Friendly Afternoon" participants will learn how to create delicious meals packed with fruits and vegetables that kids will be excited to eat. The menu will include Appetizer: Create Your Vegetable Sushi - Red Peppers, Cucumbers, Carrots, Avocado, Mango, and Cantaloupe with tasty sauces; Entrée: Roasted Butternut Squash Tacos - Black Bean Puree, Avocado Lime Sauce; and Dessert: Baked Apple S'more - Rolled Oats, Cacao Nibs, Mini Marshmallows, Cinnamon Graham Cracker.
The #TowerGimmeFive public campaign, which runs through October 31, aims to promote the benefits of healthy eating. Participants are challenged to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables per day for five days. Once they have completed this, they are encouraged to create a video through the Boomerang app or post a picture on social media and tag five people to participate in the challenge. For every video and photo posted to #TowerGimmeFive, Tower Health will donate $1 to food banks in Berks, Montgomery and Chester counties.
There are many health benefits associated with eating more fruits and vegetables daily, including better control or reduced risk of diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. There are possible monetary benefits to participating in #TowerGimmeFive. Grocery store gift cards -five $500 gift cards, 10 $250 gift cards and 50 $100 gift cards for use at a wide variety of supermarkets - will be awarded to randomly selected participants.
